BOX SCOREGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Marywood's Sam Trill scored 32 seconds into overtime, lifting Marywood past Gwynedd Mercy, 9-8, in a CSAC clash Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins, who led 5-1 after the first quarter, saw the Pacers rally, and would tie it at 8-8 with just 1:27 left in regulation.
Junior
Tommy Belmont (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and sophomore
Alfonso Manzo (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern) netted two goals each for Gwynedd, who falls to 8-4 and 2-2 in CSAC play.
Dylan Swope led the Pacers (8-3, 4-0 CSAC) with two goals and three assists. Scott Slater added two scores and two helpers.
The first quarter was all Griffins, outshooting Marywood, 18-5, and holding a 15-3 edge in groundballs. Junior
Nick Guglielmi (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) opened the scoring at the 10:53 mark. Slater would answer just over three minutes later to get the Pacers on the board. From there, GMercyU netted four goals in over the final 6:46 of the period, including a tally with just under a minute to play for a 5-1 edge.
Marywood answered with three goals in the second, including a man-down goal late in the stanza after the Griffins were looking to hit paydirt after a two minute penalty. The Pacers took their first lead with two goals 52 seconds apart midway through the third. Belmont would use an outstanding individual effort to net his second of the day with 1:40 to go and knot the game at 6-6 after three.
Dylan Swope gave the Pacers a one-goal lead early in the fourth. But the Griffins cashed in on a Pacer penalty as Manzo recorded his sixth goal and first man-up tally with 5:37 showing. At the 3:15 mark, Guglielmi found the back of the net for a 7-6 lead.
But with under two minutes to go, Rob Maini picked up a rebound off a shot to get one past Griffin goalie
John Black (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) to lock things up. Gwynedd would get two possessions in the final minute but couldn't put a shot on net.
After winning the faceoff to start the overtime and ensuing timeout, Trill ended it a the 3:28 mark.
Black totaled nine saves while Marywood keeper Joe Magargal recorded 17 stops. The Griffins would total 54 shots compared to the Pacers' 29.
Juniors
Tony McCraw (Lawnton, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and
Dillon Cave (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) also scored for GMercyU.
Gwynedd Mercy will get back at it on Wednesday night when they travel to Rosemont in a 7 p.m. start.
