RADNOR, PA. -- In another epic battle between Gwynedd Mercy and Cabrini, the Griffins edged out the Cavaliers, 5-4, with the match coming down to the final match at #6 singles.

After Gwynedd took two of three at doubles, Coach Holt had some concerns at singles, but his lineup stepped up to the forefront.

Last season's CSAC Player of the Year, Peter Brzeznski (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), defeated a strong opponent, in Cabrini's Anthony Dicicco (6-3, 6-1) at #1 singles. The Cavaliers would take the next three singles matches to take a 4-3 lead.

5th and 6th singles was what the match came down to. Sophomore Josh Carson (Plantation, Fl./West Broward) came out on fire and methodically executed his opponent....6-0, 6-1 at #5 to knot the match up at 4-4.  Holt stated "With the entire match coming down to his match and a capacity crowd on its feet lined up on the fences surrounding center court, I consulted with Nick Czibik (Brookhaven, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) before the start of his match at #6. Since there were matches that had been ending as Nick was warming up with his opponent, I asked Nick if he wanted to know the overall situation and the severity of his match....he told me he knows that it's all on him at that point and he wanted it that way.  After the match I asked him if at any point was he nervous, knowing that any possible chance that the Griffins squeaking into the playoffs could be affected by the outcome of his match....without hesitation, he said no.  That's a true warrior's mentality. Nick has come a long way in an incredibly short period of time. I couldn't be more pleased with his progress, and for his mother to be there to catch the most exciting match of the year, just tops it all off."

Czibik came up bigger than ever, winning the decisive 6th singles slot to clinch the match with authority, 6-2, 3-6, and 6-0.

The Griffins (2-1, 2-0 CSAC) return to action tomorrow with a non-conference tilt at Delaware Valley.
