BOX SCOREASTON, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Basketball team defeated Neumann University 85-77 on Saturday afternoon to pick up a crucial Colonial States Athletic Conference victory. With the victory the Griffins have now won 10 out of their last 11 game and improve to 9-2 in CSAC action.
Junior
Olivia Bradford (Lansdale, Pa. / Christopher Dock) and senior
Kelsey Yori (Folsom, Pa. / Ridley) paced Gwynedd with career highlights on the court. Bradford led the Griffins with 27 points and 11 rebounds, for her first career double-double, to lead all scorers. Yori connected on a career-high five three pointers to score a personal-best 19 points. Senior
Natasha Matthews (Norristown, Pa. / Norristown) also added a double-double with her 15-point, 10-rebound performance.
The Knights would jump out to an early six-point lead but a
Charlotte Kucowski (Philadelphia, Pa. / St. Hubert's) layup and a pair of Bradford field goals would get the Griffins right back into the contest. Gwynedd would take their largest lead of the half (29-23) on a Yori triple with just under four minutes remaining. However Neumann would answer back to tie the game with both teams squared at 35-35 heading into the break.
The Griffins were firing on all cylinders in the second half, scoring 50 points in the stanza on (18-of-36) shooting from the field. Sophomore
Nicole Dombrowski (Philadelphia, Pa. / Nazareth Academy) put GM up for good 76-66 with just over six minutes to play with her bucket inside. Bradford and Yori would close out the game scoring the last nine points for Gwynedd for the 85-77 victory.
Gwynedd out-rebounded Neumann 53-39 with Kucowski and Dombrowski grabbing nine apiece.
The Knights were led by three double-digit scorers: Jessica Schlesman (25), JoHanna Metzger (21) and Emily Lyons (13).
The Griffins return back to action on Monday when they host Marywood in another big CSAC contest as both teams are aiming to secure playoff berths. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Griffin Complex.
