BOX SCOREGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy got their 2015 off on the right foot, posting an 11-7 win over Marymount on a chilly Wednesday afternoon.
Junior
Tony McCraw (Lawnton, Pa./Central Dauphin East) scored four times, including three in the second half. Senior
Nico Belardo (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) added three scores and two assists.
The Griffins would score twice late in the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead going into the half. McCraw opened the scoring in the third, followed by tallies from
Tommy Belmont (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and a pair from Belardo to make it six in a row.
Marymount would put in two goals in the last 4:15 of the third and begin the fourth with an early tally to cut the lead to 7-5. Gwynedd would then put away the Saints with three-straight scores of their own.
Blase Cesarone (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) found the back of the net at the 13:10 mark. McCraw hooked up with Belardo just over two minutes later for a 9-5 edge. On the ensuing faceoff,
Dillon Cave (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) grinded out a win, scooped up the loose ball and took it all the way to register his second score of the day for a 10-5 lead.
The Saints' Matt Justice, who scored three times and added two assists, set up Nathan Beard on a man-up goal with 6:47 to go and later add a tally of his own to make it a 10-7 contest with 4:10 remaining.
GM got their final score just as a slashing penalty expired as Belardo found McCraw for his fourth of the game at the 1:56 mark.
Goalie
John Black (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) earned all 13 saves in net, seeing 30 shots. It would be the second-most stops in his career. Marymount's Mike Kempel recorded eight.
McCraw added eight ground balls on the day, which moved him into first place in the record books with 187.
Gwynedd Mercy resumes action on Saturday when they head to Lycoming in a 1 p.m. start.
