true Lycoming 7, Gwynedd Mercy 6
BOX SCOREGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Lycoming escaped with a 7-6 win over Gwynedd Mercy, snapping the Griffins' four-game win streak on Saturday.
Senior
Mason Risner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored twice and junior
Nico Belardo (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) added two assists but it was the Warriors' Alex Wylly, who frustrated the Griffins by making 21 saves, including seven in the final quarter.
Mike Cooper had a goal and four assists for Lycoming (2-5). Teammate Sean Reilly added four goals.
Goals form Risner and
Tony McCraw (Lawnton, Pa./Central Dauphin East) in the first matched up with tallies from Cooper and Reilly for a 2-2 score. GM was held scoreless in the second, after firing off nine shots. Wylly would make seven stops to give Lycoming a one-goal lead at the break.
Two quick scores to open the third from
Nick Guglielmi (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) and
Alfonzo Manzo (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern) put the Griffins on top, 4-3, but Reilly would strike for two goals and a late tally from Christian Jacobs turned the lead back over to the Warriors after three.
Belardo set up Risner early in the fourth to cut it to a one-goal game but minutes later, Lycoming took advantage of a Griffin penalty as Cooper assisted on Lee Pappas' man-up goal.
After pulling back within one on a goal from sophomore
Tommy Belmont (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) with 8:04 left, the Griffins persisted, getting key stops on defense looking to notch the equalizer.
A Lycoming penalty with under a minute gave GM a prime offensive opportunity, but Wylly was able to keep the Griffins off the board with a stop on Risner with seconds to play.
The Griffins held a 36-33 edge in shots. McCraw would win 14-of-17 faceoffs, which was a career-high. Goalie
John Black (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) registered 10 stops in the contest.
Gwynedd Mercy will get back at it on Wednesday when they travel to Arcadia for a 4 p.m. start.
