true Cabrini 78, Gwynedd Mercy 59
2014 CSAC Tournament Semifinal
BOX SCORERADNOR, PA. -- Cabrini ended Gwynedd Mercy's playoff run with a 78-59 win in a semifinal game of the 2014 CSAC Women's Basketball Tournament.
Senior
Nicole Dougherty (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) led the Griffins with a game-high 21 points, but GM felt the effects of a 21-5 Cabrini run over the final 7:14 of the first half, turning a two-point game into a 43-25 deficit at the break.
Amber Keys and Brittany Sandone each netted 14 points for the top-seeded Cavaliers (22-4), who will host Immaculata on Saturday in the championship game. They were two of six players in double figures
Cabrini outrebounded GM, 32-12 in the first 20 minutes, 15 of which were on the offensive side, but the Griffins looked to keep pace. Keys' putback off a miss put the Cavs up seven (20-13), but back-to-back buckets from
Natasha Matthews (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) and
Chandler DiFebbo (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) enabled Gwynedd to shrink Cabrini's lead. After a timeout, Doughery with connect on a three-pointer to pull the Griffins to 22-20. From there, the Cavs started their game-changing scoring run in which GM made just two field goals the rest of the half.
In the second, GM, with courtesy of a 17-2 spurt, would get as close as 65-50 with 5:55 left, but could not find a way to get over the hump.
Matthews finished with six points, a team-high seven rebounds and two blocks. The team would shoot 39% (23-of-59) on the evening. Cabrini was at a 46% clip (29-of-63).
It would be the final game for the team's three seniors; Dougherty,
Jordan Dominic (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge), and
Lauren Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan). The trio would play in two CSAC Championship games, winning one in 2012 and earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. In 2011, the team qualified for the postseason ECAC Tournament. In their four seasons, they have combined for 70 wins.
