BOX SCOREGALLOWAY, N.J. -- Gwynedd Mercy lost a 15-7 decision at Richard Stockton on Wednesday afternoon in the season opener for the Griffins.
Trailing 6-4 at halftime, the Ospreys outscored Gwynedd, 6-1, in the third quarter to widen the deficit.
Sophomores
Tony McCraw (Lawnton, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and
Tommy Belmont (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) each had a pair of goals while junior
Nico Belardo (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) added a score and an assist.
Vinny Gencarelli and Nick Bologno tallied three goals apiece. Bologno dished out five assists for Stockton (1-1).
The teams would trade goals to start the second quarter before the Ospreys netted two scores 2:22 apart midway in the stanza. GM would score a late tally as Belardo would set up Belmont with just over a minute to cut the hole to two where it stood at the half, 6-4.
In the third, Stockton scored three-straight to open the quarter. Belardo would end the drought with a man-up goal to make it 9-5, but the Ospreys would score the last three scores of the quarter and the first three of the fourth to stretch their lead to 10.
GM was outshot, 49-30, and won 6-of-24 faceoffs. Junior goalie
John Black (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) recorded a personal-best 16 saves in three quarters
Gwynedd Mercy will get back to action a week from today when they head to Virginia to face Marymount in a 7 p.m. start.
