LIVE STATS | LIVE VIDEOGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- History will be made Tuesday night at the Gwynedd Mercy Athletic Complex as the fourth-seeded Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Soccer team will host fifth-seeded Centenary College in a first-round matchup of the 2014 CSAC Tournament, the program's first ever home playoff game.
The Griffins enter the contest winners of five of their last seven games to finish the year 5-4 in Colonial States Athletic Conference Action. The Cyclones also finished 5-4 on the year but the Griffins won the tie breaker when they defeated Centenary, 2-0, on October 22nd in Hackettstown. Goals by
Neil Brassell (Huntingdon Valley, Pa. / Father Judge) and
Ryan Roedel (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy) and six saves from
Matt Chilcote (Carlisle, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) was the difference.
Roedel and
Rich Mychack (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge) were both honored by the CSAC in the end of the year awards. Roedel was selected to first-team All-CSAC while Mychack was a second team All-CSAC pick.
This will also be the Griffins fourth playoff appearance under head coach
Dave Bontempo. Bontempo, who led GM to semifinal appearances in 2009 and 2011, will guide Gwynedd in the first playoff matchup between the two teams. Under Bontempo, the Griffins are 3-5-1 against Centenary with four games going into overtime.
The Cyclones return to the playoffs as the defending CSAC Champion as they defeated Marywood, 1-0, in the last year's championship. Leading Centenary are three first-team All-CSAC selections in Glenn Brennen, Quinn Khouri and goalie Jesse Goleman. Luis Marin and Justin White were second-team All-CSAC selections.
In the other first-round Mmatchup tonight, the #3 seed Cabrini will host #6 seed Rosemont. #1 Neumann and #2 Marywood await opponents for Thursday's semifinal contests. The CSAC Championship will be hosted Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed.
