Women's Tennis Outguns Cabrini

Gwynedd Mercy 6, Cabrini 3

BOX SCORE

RADNOR, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy served up a big 6-3 win over Cabrini, handing the Cavaliers their first CSAC defeat and keeping the Griffins on pace for a top playoff seed.

All of the doubles matches went down to the line, with each match-up being crucial to the final score.

The Griffins bum-rushed a very strong Cabrini line-up, winning two of the three doubles matches.  After taking this narrow 2-1 lead into doubles, the Griffins knew they still had a shoot-out at the O.K. Corral and that they were in for long matches all across the board.  As head coach Jim Holt predicted, that was just the case. "While this may have not been one of my strongest teams in the past eight years, with some key departures, we knew we would have to really fight a strong team regardless".

In doubles, every match was as close as possible. The difference was in the singles department, with the decisive victory coming at the hands of freshman Amanda Goff. Goff, playing a battle-tested and four-time all-conference player in Samatha Trumbo, got off to a rough start. "It appeared to be a complete mismatch in talent, but Goff cranked it up to another gear. Her mental toughness brought her back into the match against one of best players in Cabrini history and led her to victory.....a victory nobody predicted. Goff has been an 'unseen sensation' and has gone undefeated in singles and has only one loss in doubles in CSAC play. Gabby Muller came though as I expected her to and (Kristen) Kriebel was on fire and was paramount to the team's victory. With (Josyln) Jackson losing in a tough three-set match, a lot came down to the infamous #6, Jenna Caffarello", stated Holt.

Also known as "Papale" (from the inspirational movie Invincible), Caffarello responded with a straight-set win to help seal up the win.

The Griffins will host Cedar Crest tomorrow to close out regular-season conference play. Gwynedd has clinched a spot in the CSAC Women's Tennis Team Championship, where they'll get a chance to defend their title next weekend.
