Gwynedd Mercy 8, Immaculata 1
BOX SCORE
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy took down a much improved team in Immaculata, who gave the Griffins a push at several slots, in an 8-1 decision on Friday.
Senior team captain
Rachel Fein (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) led the charge as usual with two convincing wins in both doubles and singles, where she didn't yield a single game. Doubles partner and fellow captain
Gabby Muller (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) also won in both doubles and singles, coming up big in singles especially.
Taylor Michener (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and
Kristin Kreibel (Hatfield, Pa./Pennridge) played every efficiently in a convincing 8-1 doubles victory.
Senior captain
Kellie Booth (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and
Jenna Caffarello (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) took care of business when things got tough at third doubles, winning 8-5 in a see-saw match. No question that the heat was on however, as the 8-5 victory could have gone either way. Gwynedd then battled hard at a few slots.
Michener and Muller closed out the victory with solid wins at #2 and # 3 respectively. Booth showed her true grit and experience in disposing of Theresa Martini 6-0, 6-2. The match of the day came down to
Jenna Caffarello (again, nicknamed after Vince Papale, the underdog from the movie "Invincible") where all eyes from both teams were on both players in a knock-down, complete gun-slinging shoot-out. "Papale" had just dropped the second set in a squeaker, 4-6, after barely winning in a 6-4 first set. It came down to a 3rd set tie-breaker...... in what looked like a Rocky movie, where both players were so drained both physically and emotionally. "Papale" found herself down by three points in the tie-breaker against a very hard-hitter in a match in which she clearly was the underdog. Her "back was up against the wall" and almost down and out, she appeared doomed. Somehow, she gradually fought back from behind to win a gutsy, nail-biter of a win which elicited an outpouring of excitement from the fans.
Arcadia in slated for tomorrow at 1 pm and then conference foe, Marywood is to be played on Sunday at 1pm.
