BOX SCORE

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- In exciting fashion, the Gwynedd Mercy Field Hockey Team was able to pull out a 2-1 win in an overtime shootout over Widener Tuesday night.

The Griffins took the shootout, 3-2, as sophomore Katie O'Neill (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock South)was able to beat Widener goalie Maggie Karmeris for the game winner.

Both goals came in the first half, as Gwynedd (3-2) found the back of the net just 2:36 into the contest. Junior Brittany Wilson (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) would pick up a long pass that was thrown in the circle, and was able to blast it home for her second goal of the season.

The Pride (3-3) answered late in the stanza as Mackenzie Lundquist hooked up with Devon Biglin on a penalty corner and we were knotted up at 1-1, where it stood into the half. Gwynedd held a 12-5 penalty corner edge in the first.

After a close and scoreless second half, the teams went into the first overtime. Junior Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) kept GM alive, making six of her eight saves in the extra sessions as Widener corralled up eight shots to Gwynedd's three.

In the best-of-five shootout, both sides were successful on goals in their first attempt. Kruk would stop Hannah Dinsmore in second round, while sophomore Stephanie Bacho (Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross) found paydirt for a 2-1 lead. Again, both teams scored in round three before Dana Adamson's attempt in round four was no good. With two attempts to clinch the win, O'Neill sealed it up as her attempt got under Karmeris and trickled into the cage, ending a very suspenseful night.

For the game, GM outshot Widener, 20-16, and totaled 24 penalty corners to the Pride's 12.

Both Kruk and Karmeis finished with eight saves apiece.

Gwynedd Mercy resumes action on Saturday when they travel to nationally ranked College of New Jersey.
