St. Davids, Pa. – (9/5/2026) – The Gwynedd Mercy University (0-2) field hockey team continued its early-season schedule Saturday afternoon with a road matchup at Eastern University (2-0), where the Griffins fell 8-0 to the Eagles. Gwynedd Mercy moved to 0-2 on the season, while Eastern improved to 2-0.
Griffin Highlights:
- The Griffins were tested early by a strong Eastern attack, but senior goalkeeper Nikki Williams (Cinnaminson, N.J.) in her first start of the season turned into a busy performance in the cage. Williams played all 60 minutes and finished with ten saves, making three stops in the first quarter, three more in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth.
- Gwynedd Mercy began generating more offensive opportunities after the break. Sophomore midfielder Gianna Radcliffe (Harleysville, Pa.) recorded the Griffins' first shot of the afternoon at 35:14, but her attempt was blocked by the Eastern defense. The Griffins continued to compete through the third period while Williams added another save late in the quarter.
- The Griffin attack found additional chances in the fourth quarter. Radcliffe put Gwynedd Mercy's first shot on goal at 50:23, forcing the Eastern goalkeeper to make a save. A few minutes later, Senior midfielder Morgan Hoban (Cinnaminson, N.J.) earned Gwynedd Mercy's first penalty corner of the game before having a shot blocked at 53:30.
- Radcliffe led the Gwynedd Mercy offense with two shots, including one on goal, while Hoban added another attempt. The Griffins finished with three total shots, two of which came during the fourth quarter as they continued to push offensively through the final whistle.
- Williams highlighted the afternoon for the Griffins with her double-digit save performance, turning away ten of Eastern's 18 shots on goal.
Gwynedd Mercy is back on Wednesday, September 9, when the team welcomes Moravian University to the Athletic Complex for their first home match of the 2026 season with a scheduled 7:00 p.m. start.
