GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy won their third in a row after a 13-10 CSAC win over Marywood on Senior Day.
The Griffins fought back from a pair of first-half deficits and used a stellar defensive effort in the fourth quarter that saw no goals allowed.
Seniors
Roy Bakeoven (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and
William Beck (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) along with freshman
Tony McCraw (Lawnton, Pa./Central Dauphin East) all had three goals apiece to help Gwynedd defeat the Pacers for the first time during the regular season.
Sam Trill and Greg Nester also netted three goals each to lead Marywood (3-8, 2-1 CSAC), who were looking to win their third in a row in Gwynedd Valley.
Trailing 4-2 early in the second, the Griffins put together a string of three-straight with scores from sophomore
Nico Belardo (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington), Beck on the man-up, and Risner on a beautiful behind the head shot past Pacer goalie Nicholas Cornella.
But Marywood answered with three of their own to go back up by two, 7-5 late in the stanza. Bakeover would hook up with Risner right before the half to make it a one-goal game at the break.
The Griffins would come out on fire in the third, scoring five-straight times over an eight and a half minute span to lead 11-7. Again, the Pacers tried to answer, getting three quick goals in 1:31 of elapsed time late in the third. Bakeoven made it 12-10 with an unassisted score with 2:04 left. It stayed scoreless late into the fourth as McCraw had the lone tally to account for the final tally.
GM outshot Marywood, 36-29, and won the groundball battle, 23-22.
Goalie
Ryley O'Keefe (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) made eight saves. Cornella recorded 15.
Prior to the game, the team's six seniors were honored in a special ceremony: Risner, Beck, Bakeoven, O'Keefe,
Jonathan Figliola (Weston, Ct./Weston) and
Dustan Mangin (Perkasie, Pa./Archbishop Wood).
Gwynedd-Mercy resumes action on Wednesday, April 10th when they welcome Immaculata in another CSAC tilt here in a 4 p.m. start.
