Griffins Fall In CSAC Opener At Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. --  Centenary downed Gwynedd-Mercy , 9-6, in both team's CSAC opener.

The Cyclones scored two goals 12 seconds apart late in the third that helped break a 4-4 tie to go on for the win.

Seniors Roy Bakeoven (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and Mason Risner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each notched a pair of goals. Dustan Mangin (Perkasie, Pa./Archbishop Wood) chipped in two assists, while defensively, Reese Lachner (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) recorded nine ground balls and four caused turnovers, both game highs.

The Griffins (2-4, 0-1 CSAC) led 3-0 after the first, using two man-up tallies from Risner and William Beck (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) along with a tally from Brandon Ford (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). Centenary would answer early in the second, notching three of their own goals, Jeff Prudente and Joey DiBiasse got the Cyclones on the board in the period's first 2:06 and later at the 7:17 mark with a score from Robert Nuzzolese as the teams were tied at 3-3 at the half.

Prudente would notch two-straight goals in a 12 second-span that opened up a 6-4 lead. Cameron Gunn would score two four-quarter goals to increase the deficit to four goals. Risner would convert a man-down goal with 2:32 left, but the Griffins could draw no closer.

GM had 13 of their 34 shots come in the fourth quarter alone while the team converted on 3-of-4 man-up opportunities.

Prudente finished with three scores while Gunn also added two assists.

Goalie Ryley O'Keefe (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) finished with 14 saves. Kevin Switzer made nine for Centenary (6-0, 1-0 CSAC).

Gwynedd-Mercy returns to action on Wednesday when they welcome Arcadia in a non-league affair here starting at 4 p.m.
