WILLIAMSPORT, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy was upended in their 2013 season opener, falling 13-7 at Lycoming on Saturday.
Senior
William Beck (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) went for a career-high five points (three goals, two assists) and
Roy Bakeoven (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) also netted three goals. The senior tied a school single-game record with two man-up goals.
Lycoming's Matt McCaffer scored a game-high five tallies, three of which came in a five-goal spurt later in the first quarter. After early scores from Bakeoven and Beck, the Warriors answered with four-straight goals and McCaffer's tally to open the second for a 5-2 lead.
Later in the second, the Griffins yielded four goals and found themselves down, 9-3. Bakeoven would net the first of his man-up goals. GM would trail 9-4 at halftime. Lycoming would start the second half with three goals in a row to build an eight-score lead.
The team stats were very close, as the Griffins outshot the Warriors, 35-32, while each team won 12-of-24 faceoffs and had 14 turnovers apiece. GM was good on 16-of-20 clears and Lycoming was 17-of-22.
Sophomore
Ryan Murphy (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) played the first half and recorded four saves.
John Black (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) saw action in the entire second and registered seven stops. Alex Wylly made 19 saves for Lycoming (1-3).
Gwynedd-Mercy will have their home opener on Wednesday, March 6th when they welcome Richard Stockton here in a 4 p.m. start.
