Gwynedd Mercy 9, Keystone 0
BOX SCORE
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffins posted a shutout today over the Keystone Giants, 9-0, paving their way to yet another undefeated regular season.
This impressive statistic is over the span of the past six years and was led by the dynamic performance throughout the entire season by senior captain
Rachel Fein (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), who finished her singles 10-0 in conference play.
"Six years of undefeated in play in the regular season is something we are certainly proud of, but we have to now focus on the upcoming playoffs, where there are some very good teams" said Coach Holt. A large part of the streak is, in part, due to Fein, who has gone an astonishing and jaw-dropping 80-0 in both singles and doubles during the regular season over career. Regarding Fein's stellar performance over that span, Holt stated "I have been to the Great Wall of China, I have seen the pyramids of Egypt, and I have even seen
Corina Davis make a nice volley, but in all my years of coaching, I have never witnessed such an unlikely career unfold for a player even of Rachel's caliber".
The team overall played well, but especially
Kellie Booth (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and
Kati Courtney (Bordentown, Pa./Northern Burlington), who played their last career match on the GM courts. "Both Kati and Kellie played well considering the horrific, windy, and cold conditions". In a match where players were reaching for hot chocolate instead of Gatorade, the Griffins did the best they could and now look ahead to the CSAC Team Tournament which begins this weekend.
The top-seeded Gwynedd Mercy Women's Tennis Team will take on fourth-seeded Immaculata Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Courts in Philadelphia. Second-seeded Marywood will do battle with third-seeded Cabrini immediately following the match. Friday's winners will meet on Saturday at 2:30 to decide the CSAC Team Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Team Tournament in the Spring.
