LAPLUME, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy held off Keystone, 66-65, to win their third-straight game on Saturday in a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup.
Down two at the half, the Griffins (5-2, 3-0 CSAC) used a 25-7 run to start the period claim their biggest lead (56-40) with 11 minutes left. The Giants would get the lead down to 10 with just over four minutes to play and later just three with seconds remaining. The GM defense yielded a late bucket, but on the inbounds play, the Griffins were able to beat the half-court press and run out the clock.
Junior
Lauren Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and sophomore
Natasha Matthews (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) each had 16 points respectively. Matthews,
Nicole Dougherty (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) and
Shea Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and all were close to double-doubles. Matthews and Wassel pulled down nine while Dougherty grabbed eight.
Tiana Cuttino netted 14 and teammate Jazmyn Robinson added 13 for Keystone (5-2, 2-1 CSAC).
The first half saw the teams in a seesaw battle as 11 lead changes took place and there were seven ties. The Giants had the largest lead of the stanza with 42 ticks left before the half as Robinson hit a bucket and drew a foul for a five-point edge (33-28). Her free throw was no good and the Griffins capitalized with a three-pointer from Smith before the buzzer to cut it to two at the break.
GM responded from a 30.6% shooting effort in the first to go on a 16-for-34 (47.1%) clip in the second. It was the first game this season Gwynedd was outrebounded as the Giants claimed a 53-48 edge on the glass.
Wassel added a career-best four assists, with two blocks and two steals. Smith connected on four of the team's five treys.
Gwynedd-Mercy is off until Saturday when they host Emory & Henry College out of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference at the Griffin Complex at 2 p.m.
