EASTON, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy's chances for a fifth-straight conference title were halted in a 5-3 loss to Marywood in the 2012 CSAC Team Tournament Championship on Saturday at the Northwood Tennis Club.
The Griffins were seeking to become the first team in conference history to win the championship five times in a row. The Pacers won their 10th title overall and first since 2003.
The match started with doubles play where Gwynedd took the first two flights. The #1 pairing of junior
Rachel Fein (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and
Gabby Muller (Washington Twp, N.J./Washington Twp.) won 8-3 over Marywood's Kara Hoff and Megan Nastelli while the duo of senior
Chelsea Jones (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) and sophomore
Caroline Lockwood (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) won an 8-4 decision over Melissa Hudock and Carly Leitzel.
The Pacers (11-3) were able to take the #3 doubles match as junior
Kellie Booth (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and freshman
Zachara Harley (Wyndmoor, Pa./Springfield) saw Lauren Fersch and Emily Hoskins rally from a 7-6 deficit to win 9-7, giving the pair their first loss of the season.
Fein kickstarted the singles matches with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hoff to put GM up 3-1. Hoskins would then score a win at #5 singles over Harley and Hudock took down Muller at #3 and the match became tied at 3-3.
Marywood would close out the match with near simultaneous wins at #2 and #4. The first team to five wins out of the best-of-nine format, would be declared the winner and all action shall be stopped.
It is the first loss to a CSAC opponent in the playoffs since a 5-1 loss to Cabrini in the 2007 final. This year's appearance marks the seventh-straight season the Griffins have played in the championship match.
Gwynedd-Mercy finishes the season with an overall mark of 14-2.
