SCRANTON, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy secured the top playoff seed with a 6-3 win at Marywood on Saturday to go 10-0 in CSAC play for the fifth year in a row.
The Griffins (12-1, 10-0 CSAC) used key wins at #2 and #3 doubles to go up 3-0. The team of senior
Chelsea Jones (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) and sophomore
Caroline Lockwood (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) rallied from a 7-2 deficit to win 9-8 (7-5). Marywood would lead 7-4 at #3 doubles but the duo of junior
Kellie Booth (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and freshman
Zachara Harley (Wyndmoor, Pa./Springfield) battled back for another tiebreak win, 9-8 (8-6).
Jones, along with junior
Rachel Fein (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and sophomore
Gabby Muller (Washington Twp, N.J./Washington Twp.) would also score big wins in singles action. Jones outlasted the Pacers' Megan Nastelli, 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 at #4 and Muller grinded out a 6-3, 6-4 victory at #3 over Melissa Hudock. Fein was again dominant with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #1.
Gwynedd-Mercy will take on Division I LaSalle on Tuesday in a final tune-up for the CSAC Team Championships. The Griffins will look for an unprecedented fifth-straight title as their quest begins on Friday at the Northwood Tennis Club in Easton, Pa. GM will take on #4 Keystone at 9 a.m. followed by #3 Neumann and #2 Marywood. Friday's winners will meet on Saturday at 2 p.m.
