GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A strong start helped Gwynedd-Mercy take down Neumann, 13-7, in the regular-season finale for the Griffins Wednesday night in a Colonial States Athletic Conference contest.
Three goals from
Stefan Hetland (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) and two each from
Craig Trueblood (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg),
Roy Bakeoven (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan),
Dustin Mangin (Perkasie, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and
Liam Malley (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) helped GM secure the #3 seed in next week's CSAC Playoffs.
The Griffins (6-8, 4-2 CSAC) scored the game's first six goals and held a 7-1 lead after the first quarter.
Justin Mailoux had a game-high four goals for the Knights (3-10, 1-4 CSAC). His third tally pulled Neumann to 8-5 with just over four minutes in the first half. Trueblood countered with his second goal to put GM up 9-5 at the break..From there, the Griffins yielded just two second-half goals, while netting three in the final quarter to help cement the victory.
Gwynedd outshot Neumann, 47-22, and won 17-of-22 faceoffs. GM recorded 32 groundballs as
Jon-Eric Lane (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and
Jonathan Figliola (Weston, Ct./Weston) each totaled six.
Goalie
Rich Zagari (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) made nine stops. Neumann keeper Andrew Neubauer had 12.
The Griffins will play at #2-seeded Marywood on Tuesday in a CSAC Tournament Semifinal starting at 7 p.m.
