Fourth Quarter Drought Spells Doom In Loss At Hood

FREDERICK, MD. -- Gwynedd-Mercy was outscored 3-0 in the fourth quarter in a 7-3 non-league loss at Hood Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Roy Bakeoven (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scored twice, with his second tally as the only goal in the third quarter, pulling the Griffins (5-8) within one score. Bakeoven would open the scoring just 57 seconds into the game on an assist from Dustin Mangin (Perkasie, Pa./Archbishop Wood). Corey Roberts answered for the Blazers scoring twice and assisting on another giving Hood a 3-1 lead into the second.

Junior Nick Coan (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) added an unassisted tally but the Blazers countered as well as Gwynedd was down 4-2 at the half.

Hood's Scott Thompson netted two goals, both coming in the first 5:39 of the fourth, and assisting on another in the stanza to help the Blazers pull away.

The Griffins were outshot, 36-31, but won 10-of-14 faceoffs on the day.

Sophomore goalie Rich Zagari (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) made 11 saves while Hood keeper John Martin recorded 19.

Gwynedd returns to action on Wednesday, April 27th against Neumann in the regular-season finale. With a win, GM will clinch a playoff spot for the third year in a row.
