Women's Basketball Gets Clutch Win At Neumann

ASTON, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy won its third in a row as the Griffins handed Neumann their first conference loss in a 73-67 win in Aston on Saturday.

Freshman Taylour Alston (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) scored 14 points and added eight boards off the bench as the Griffins (13-6, 9-2 CSAC) also had some key buckets down the stretch to win it.
Junior Brittany Neill (Woodlyn, Pa./Archmere Academy Del.) also added 14 points and grabbed nine boards. Bryn Cotteta (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) totaled a team-high 15 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the line.

The Griffins shook off a slow start using a 20-5 run midway through the first half capped off by a three-pointer from Neill, giving GM a 26-15 edge. Neumann (13-7, 10-1 CSAC) would rally to tie it at 28-28 with just over four minutes in the stanza. Gwynedd added two free throws from Cotteta with two minutes left where the score stood 30-28 at the break.

The teams stayed neck-and-neck in the second before the Alston and Griffins tried to break things open. Her turnaround bucket underneath kickstarted a 9-0 run, giving GM its biggest lead of the contest, 54-41, with 8:54 left. She would score 12 of her 14 points in the second half alone.

Again, the Knights tried to make things interesting, pulling to within 62-61, with 2:41 left. It was later 66-64 with just over a minute left as freshman Jordan Dominic (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) hit her only bucket of the game, a big three-pointer, to sway the momentum for good.

Katie Young led Neumann with 22 points and 17 rebounds, both game highs. The Knights outrebounded the Griffins, 50-42. Gwynedd though, shot 40.3% for the game while limiting Neumann to just 31.3% for the game.

The Griffins are back at in on Monday as they host Cabrini in a CSAC Doubleheader with the men. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m.
