DOVER, DEL. -- Gwynedd-Mercy suffered a 14-7 defeat at the hands of Wesley in the season opener for the Griffins on Saturday.

Junior Stefan Hetland (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Mason Risner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) had two goals apiece and freshman Nathan Pendleton (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added a goal and two assists for Gwynedd but the Wolverines stymied GM with six-straight goals over a quarter and a half to open up a wide margin.

Gwynedd won 15 of the 25 faceoffs but were outdone by 11 penaties which lead to five Wesley man-up scores.

After the Wolverines (2-0) went up 2-0 in the first quarter, sophomore Roy Bakeoven (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) tallied a goal at the 9:28 mark. It would be the last score until 10:50 left in the third from Pendleton, as a 2-1 deficit turned into a 8-1 hole.

Hetland netted a pair of man-up goals, but Wesley won the shot (51-22) and groundball (36-28) battles.

Goalie Rich Zagari (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) made 16 saves.

The Griffins will have their home opener on Wednesday when they welcome Franklin & Marshall beginning at 4 p.m.
