Avellino and Papa Earn AEC Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

Lancaster, Pa. – (3/3/2025) – Gwynedd Mercy University senior midfielder Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and sophomore attack Gianna Papa (Stratford, N.J.) were mentioned on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll for their contributions to the Griffins’ 17-6 win at Wilkes University (Feb. 26). The former was the backbone of the victory over the Colonels with three goals on six shots, four ground balls, four caused turnovers, and five draw controls. Meanwhile, the latter had a career-high five points (3 goals, 2 assists), four shots, a ground ball, and a caused turnover.

Marymount University swept this week’s major awards as senior midfielder Ella Baker (Hanover, Pa.) and senior goalkeeper Hannah Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) were respectively named the AEC Women’s Lacrosse Player and Defensive Player of the Week. Avellino and Papa were joined on the AEC Weekly Honor Roll by Marywood University junior midfielder Avery Meighan (Floral Park, N.Y.), as well as Neumann University graduate goalkeeper Abbie Fenton (Marmora, N.J.) and sophomore attack Alena Catka (Brookhaven, Pa.).

Seven different Griffins contributed to the Red and Gold’s first win of the 2025 season as Gwynedd Mercy University enjoyed a full team effort in a 17-6 win at Wilkes University (0-3). Avellino scored the first goal of the contest (1-0, 13:54), but later in the opening frame it was Papa who propelled the Griffins to 6-1 (0:27) first-quarter lead with back-to-back tallies to end the frame (1:03, 0:27). Each side scored a tally in the second quarter, 7-2 (1:54), but in the second half Gwynedd Mercy University dominated Wilkes University with just three turnovers, a 9-of-10 (.900) success rate on clears, and 10-4 scoring advantage; 17-6.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Athletic Complex on Wednesday, March 5, when they host Eastern University for a 4:00 p.m. Morgan’s Message Night affair.
