Stewart Named AEC Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, Marable Merits Honor Roll
Lancaster, Pa. – (2/3/2025) – Gwynedd Mercy University placed a pair of student-athletes on this week’s
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Basketball Report as seniors
Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Mike Marable (Philadelphia, Pa.) were respectively recognized with the league’s Defensive Player of the Week and Weekly Honor Roll awards. Stewart led the Griffins to a pair of league wins over Pratt Institute – 79-60 on January 28 and 90-73 on February 1 – with 21.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 6.0 steals per game. Marable was a major factor in the victories as well with 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 2.0 steals per game versus the Cannoneers.
Opposite Stewart, Neumann University junior guard Bryan Etienne (Coral Springs, Fla.) was named the AEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Marable was joined on thew AEC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll by Immaculata University sophomore guard Mandon Seapoe (Upper Darby, Pa.), Pratt Institute freshman guard Thomas Graetz (Sydney, Australia), Neumann University junior forward Donte Dupriest (Philadelphia, Pa.), Centenary University (N.J.) sophomore guard Naire Preston (Ewing, N.J.), Marymount University freshman guard Mushin Muhammad (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior guard Isaac Harris (Cherryville, Pa.), as well as Marywood University senior guard Brendan Franko (Wantagh, N.J.) and sophomore guard Michel Loftin (Atlantic, Ga.).
In the first-ever and first of back-to-back AEC contests versus league newcomer Pratt Institute (0-19, 0-7), Gywnedd Mercy University (17-3, 5-2) forced 31 Cannoneers turnovers en route to a 76-60 victory (Jan. 28). The Red and Gold never trailed Pratt Institute as they scored first basket of the game, 2-0 (19:40), led all the way to a 39-30 (0:29) halftime spread, and gave the home team little chance at a comeback in a 16-point win. Stewart led the Griffins with 23 points; he was 9-of-17 (.529) from the floor with three three-point baskets (3-of-7, .429) and a couple of free throws (2-of-2, 1.000) in addition to two rebounds, three assists, and six of the Griffins' 23 steals. Marable finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

D.J. Johnson (Norristown, Pa.) pushed Gwynedd Mercy University's first-half lead over Pratt Institute to double digits for the time; 41-31 (4:54).
From there, the Griffins' victory was never truly in danger as the Red and Gold parlayed their 11-point, 51-40 (0:41), halftime lead into a 90-73 victory with 10 Cannoner turnovers and a 16-of-22 (.727) second-half free throw performance. Three of the four Red and Gold seniors scored at least 10 points in the win; Stewart led with 20 points, Marable netted 19, and guard
Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J.) added 14 more. In addition to his points, Stewart recorded two rebounds, two assists, and a team-high six steals. Marable offered team-highs in rebounds (8) and assists (5) in addition to his points. He also made two steals.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Griffin Complex on Wednesday, February 5, when they host Marywood University for a 6:00 p.m. AEC tip-off.
