Pugh and Gaston Grace Final AEC Women’s Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll of the Season
Lancaster, Pa. – (11/11/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University juniors, setter Ayanna Gaston (Middletown, Del.) and outside hitter Charlotte Pugh (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned an appearance on the final Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Volleyball Weekly Roll of the season for their play in the Griffins’ 3-2 (25-15, 23-25, 25-23, 19-25, 12-15) loss to Marywood University. Pugh totaled a career-high 19.0 points with a career-high 16 kills and three aces while Gaston contributed two kills, 40 assists, three aces, a block assist, and seven digs to the Red and Gold effort.
Marywood University graduate middle hitter Casey Hagerstrom (Bethpage, N.Y.) was named the AEC Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week, while her teammate freshman setter Libby Zick (New Milford, Pa.) garnered the AEC Specialist Player of the Week title.
Wednesday’s AEC match was roller coaster affair as Gwynedd Mercy University (16-10, 3-3) won the first (25-15) and third (25-23) sets only to be upended by Marywood University (8-19, 4-2) in a 3-2 (25-15, 23-25, 25-23, 19-25, 12-15) final. The Red and Gold hit .300 (12K-3E-30TA) in the first set and .206 (13K-6E-34TA) in the third set with Pugh and Gaston leading the way. The third-set win was more dramatic with the Griffins coming from a 21-18 deficit to take control of the match with a 25-23 victory. Pugh added two assists and a team-high 18 digs to her points, while Gaston’s performance was her sixth match of 40 assists or more this season.
With a 3-3 record in conference play, Gwynedd Mercy University will serve as the #4 seed in the 2024 AEC Women’s Volleyball Championship Tournament and will host #5 Pratt Institute in a 6:30 p.m. First Round match on Tuesday, November 12.
