Spencer Earns Second AEC Men’s Basketball Defensive Player Of the Week, Parker Appears On Honor Roll

Lancaster, Pa. – (12/20/2021) – Graduate forward Donaven Spencer (Sicklerville, N.J.) and sophomore guard Aziz Parker (Westhampton, N.J.) were recently and respectively recognized as the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week and Weekly Honor Roll mention after their contributions to Gwynedd Mercy University’s 86-60 victory over Bryn Athyn College.

Parker was the top producer of the Griffins' double-digit quartet, hitting four three-point baskets (4-of-9, .444) en route to 24 points; it is his sixth game of 20 points or more and third consecutively. Parker's points came with five rebounds, three assists, a block, and two steals. Spencer finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals. It was Spencer’s fourth double-double of the season and this is his fourth AEC Weekly Report appearance of the season with a pair of Defensive Player of the Week (Nov. 8, Dec. 20) honors and a pair of Honor Roll (Dec. 6, Dec. 13) mentions. This was the first AEC Weekly Report appearance for Parker this season.

Spencer led the initial Gwynedd Mercy University (8-2) push, 7-0 (18:44), Bryn Athyn College (1-8) crawled back within three points, 12-9 (14:53). Parker reenergized the Gwynedd Mercy University offense with a seven-point stretch that included a three-point basket (15-9, 14:05), a pair of free throws (17-9, 13:40), and a pull-up jumper that made the difference 10 points, 19-9, with 13:20 remaining in the first half. But he was not the only Griffin to reach double figures in the opening period as Spencer offered 11 points and graduate guard Matt O'Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) registered 10 points en route to Gwynedd Mercy University's 48-30 (0:01) halftime edge. Following intermission, the Griffin lead reached 20 points, 53-33 (18:48), in the opening two minutes and maxed out at 27 points, 84-57 (2:07) just seconds before the two-minute mark, before settling on a 86-60 (0:27) final spread.

Gwynedd Mercy University travels to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) DI member, Rider University on Monday, December 20. The Griffins and Broncos are scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Alumni Gymnasium.
