Schwartz Selected to AEC Softball Weekly Honor Roll
Lancaster, Pa. – (4/30/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University freshman second baseman
Avery Schwartz (Collegeville, Pa.) knocked in seven runs with five hits (5-for-10) during a 3-3 closing week that included a win over Penn State Schuylkill (W, 3-0 on Apr. 22) and a sweep of Albright College (W, 6-3/W, 4-3 on Apr. 24) to earn a spot on the
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Softball Weekly Honor Roll. She also finished the week with two walks, three runs scored, and three stolen bases.
Immaculata University sophomore third baseman Carlee Karcher (Maple Shade, N.J.) was recognized as the AEC Softball Player of the Week, while the AEC Softball Pitcher of the Week title went to Neumann University junior Olivia Ammon (Gap, Pa.). Additional Weekly Honor Roll selections were made for Centenary University (N.J.) junior pitcher/infielder Jaelynn Miller (Oxford, N.J.), Marymount University sophomore utility Kaylee Atkins (Chesapeake, Va.), and Neumann University senior catcher Elizabeth Shire (Bensalem, Pa.).
Freshman
Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, Pa.) was impressive in Gwynedd Mercy University’s first game versus Penn State Schuylkill (20-12) as she allowed four hits and a walk, while striking out six in her fifth win (5-6) of the season. In support, Gwynedd Mercy University (14-19) got three runs on four hits including a two-run double in the sixth inning from Schwartz. The Nittany Lions forced the split with a 4-2 win in game two.
Schwartz went 1-for-6 versus Albright College, but made the most of it with a fielder’s choice run-batted-in (RBI) (5-1) in the second inning of game one and a two-RBI miscue in the sixth inning that tied the contest a 3-3. She also scored the winning run (4-3) a batter later on another poorly-played ball by the Lions’ second baseman.
In the Saturday AEC doubleheader versus Immaculata University, Schwartz went 2-for-8 with a run and an RBI. She singled in a run in the first inning of the opener (1-0) and scored the Griffins’ first run of game two when she crossed the plate on a fourth-inning double from senior third baseman
Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) (1-1).
Gwynedd Mercy University serves as the #4 seed for the upcoming 2024 AEC Softball Championship Tournament and joins #1 Centenary University and #6 Cabrini University for Friday’s (May 3) Pod Play Round. The Griffins are schedule to play the Cavaliers at 2:00 p.m. and the top-seeded Cyclones at 4:00 p.m.
