Vinson Makes Third AEC Weekly Report With Second Honor Roll Recognition

Lancaster, Pa. – (1/8/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University senior guard JoHaan Vinson (Philadelphia, Pa.) made this third Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Report of the season with his second appearance on the league’s Weekly Honor Roll. Vinson averaged 19.0 points (PPG) and 6.0 rebounds (RPG), while totaling a block and two steals in an opening week of AEC play versus Neumann University (L, 78-80 on Jan. 3) and Cabrini University (W, 96-75 on Jan. 6). Marymount University swept the AEC Player and Defensive Player of the Week honors with senior guard Montell Cooper (Glenn Dale, Md.) and senior center C.J. Highsmith Jr. (Richmond, Va.) respectively garnering the titles. Additional Weekly Honor Roll recognition was given to Cabrini University junior guard Donoven Mack (New Castle, Del.), as well as Neumann University junior guard Amari Little (Ellicott City, Md.) and freshman guard Jarell Keel (Philadelphia, Pa.).

Gwynedd Mercy University (8-7, 1-1) and Neumann University (3-11, 1-0) opened their AEC seasons with exclamation as the long-time rivals went wire-to-wire in a thrilling 80-78 Wednesday night final. Unfortunately, it was the Knights who claimed the league prize with a three-point buzzer beater that sent the Griffin Complex into pandemonium. Graduate guard Manny Clark (Pottsgrove, Pa.) and Vinson led four Griffins in double figures with 19 and 18 points, respectively; Vinson recorded five rebounds and a block in addition to his scoring.

Gwynedd Mercy University evened their early AEC season record with Saturday's 96-75 win at Cabrini University (4-10, 1-1). The Griffins controlled the affair from the opening tip, establishing a double-digit lead (15-4, 13:46) before the 13-minute mark and improving it to 16 points (23-7, 10:29) before the 10-minute mark. Then, a 42-33 (0:34) Red and Gold halftime advantage transformed into a 20-point spread at several times during the latter period with a 59.4% (19-of-32) shooting performance distancing Gwynedd Mercy University for their eventual 21-point victory. Five Griffins finished in double figures; Vinson led the group with 20 points while grabbing seven rebounds and making a pair of steals.

Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Wednesday, January 10, when they host Centenary University (NJ) for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
