Owens Named AEC Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, Crossley Collects Honor Roll Mention

Lancaster, Pa. – (11/15/2021) – For their play during a 1-2 opening week, juniors Kelly Owens (Schwenksville, Pa.) and Haley Crossley (Warminster, Pa.) were respectively recognized as the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week and Weekly ?Honor Roll mention. Owens totaled 11 steals over the course of the three games, including five-steal efforts in Gwynedd Mercy University's contests with King College (PA) and Penn State Lehigh Valley. Meanwhile, Crossley posted a 27-point, 11-rebound double-double in her 2021-2022 debut and garnered All-Tournament Team honors at the Gwynedd Mercy University Tip-Off Tournament.

Gwynedd Mercy University (1-2) welcomed King's College (PA) (1-0) to the Griffin Complex on Tuesday, November 9, for their 2021-2022 season opener. From the opening tip it felt as if the ball never touched the ground in a high-paced affair that finished with Gwynedd Mercy University closing in on the Monarchs late in the fourth quarter of a 112-103 final. Crossley finished with 27 points on 10-of-13 (.769) shooting performance and a 7-of-9 (.778) success rate from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Owens provided 13 points, three rebounds, an assist, and five steals. She was 3-of-8 (.375) from long range.

?In the first contest of the Gwynedd Mercy University Tip-Off Tournament, Crossley led six players in figures with 26 points as the Griffins claimed a 109-99 victory over Penn State Lehigh Valley (1-1). Crossley was 7-of-14 (.500) from the field and a 11-of-13 (.846) from the charity stripe, while grabbing eight rebounds, making an assist, and recording four steals. She was joined in double figures by Owens, who complimented her 18 points with two rebounds, two assists, and five more steals.

As a result, the Griffins met Messiah University (2-0) in the Gwynedd Mercy University Tip-Off Tournament Championship. Unfortunately, the Falcons controlled the affair as they established a 68-31 halftime lead before defeating the Gwynedd Mercy University (1-2) by a 98-68 margin. Sophomore guard Lynzie Eggers (Turnersville, N.J.) led the Griffins with 21 points, 5 rebounds, and an assist. She was joined in double figures by Crossley (14 points) and senior guard Elise Sylvester (Pottstown, Pa.) (12); the former was recognized on the all-tournament team. Owens finished the affair with seven points, two rebounds, and her 11th steal of the week.

Gwynedd Mercy University plays next on Tuesday, November 15, when they visit Arcadia University for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off to the Battle of the 309.
