Reilly Reels in AEC Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week Award
Lancaster, Pa. – (2/20/2023) – Gwynedd Mercy University senior goalkeeper Reilly Owens (Pottstown, Pa.) was named the
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on the initial league report for the 2023 season. The Griffin captain totaled seven saves while recording the win (1-0), six ground balls, and three caused turnovers in a 9-7 season-opener victory over King’s College (PA)

(Feb. 18).
Gwynedd Mercy University (1-0) emerged from a 4-3 first quarter deficit to lead King’s College (0-1) by a narrow 6-5 lead at halftime of Saturday’s home opener. The Monarchs tied the contest in the third quarter, 6-6 (4:41), but a pair of fourth quarter scores from sophomore forward
Hailey Bloom (Margate City, N.J.) (10:12, 6:50) and an exclamation point from sophomore midfielder
Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) (9-6, 3:04) gave the Griffins enough insurance to relieve Owens in goal for the final 1:59.
Owens was solid in net, totaling three saves in the first quarter, three saves in the third quarter, and a seventh before leaving the game in the fourth quarter. Her three caused turnovers were critical in slowing the Monarch offense and triggering a Griffin offense that was successful on 17-of-29 (.586) clears.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Wednesday, February 22, when they host Alvernia University in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
