Vinson Secures Second AEC Men’s Basketball  Weekly Honor Roll Appearance
 
Lancaster, Pa. – (2/20/2023) – Gwynedd Mercy University junior guard JoHaan Vinson (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned his second appearance on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll with his play in league wins over Centenary University (NJ) (W, 85-79 on Feb. 15) and Cabrini University (W, 66-64 on Feb. 18). Vinson averaged 19.0 points (PPG) and 6.0 rebounds per game (RPG) while totaling two assists, two blocks, and three steals.
 
AEC Men's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll (2/20/2023) - JoHaan VinsonVinson had the hot hand early versus Centenary University (NJ) (7-15, 2-9), drawing a three-shot foul (5-0, 17:37) and hitting a pair of threes (15:19, 14:56) to boost Gwynedd Mercy University (13-12, 7-5) to a quick double-digit lead, 14-4 (14:56). The Griffin advantage held through halftime, 34-30 (0:00), and the first few minutes of the second half, 38-37 (17:07). Later, more key Vinson three pointers (9:03, 8:31) and the backcourt hustle of freshman guard D.J. Johnson (Norristown, Pa.) and junior guard Manny Clark (Pottsgrove, Pa.) delivered Gwynedd Mercy University from a five-point deficit (45-40, 3:55) to a nine-point perch (64-55, 8:31) and an eventual 85-79 (0:00) win in the home finale. Vinson scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the first half. He also recorded six rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal.
 
Gwynedd Mercy University split their season series and secured the #3 seed in the upcoming AEC Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament with a narrow 66-64 victory at Cabrini University (10-15, 5-7). The Griffins held a comfortable 37-21 halftime lead and maxed their advantage out at 17 points, 40-23 (18:49) before Cabrini University used a 33-12 run that grabbed them a 56-55 lead with 3:40 to play. Clark and Johnson kept the Griffins on the Cavaliers' heels until the former's floater in the lane returned Gwynedd Mercy University to the lead in the closing seconds; 65-64 (0:25). A Vinson steal and a Clark free throw 66-64 (0:11) provided the extra point in the victory. Vinson was 6-of-10 (.600) and totaled 14 points in the opening period; he finished with 19 points on an 8-of-15 (.533) shooting effort that came with six rebounds, a block, and two steals.
 
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action tonight, Monday, February 20, when they host #6 Marywood University in a 7:00 p.m. AEC Quarterfinal.
