Sharkey Scores Second AEC Defensive Player Of the Week Honor, Eggers Earns Honor Roll

Lancaster, Pa. – (12/19/2022) – Despite falling short of Rowan University in a 79-72 final, Gwynedd Mercy University was well represented on today’s Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Basketball Weekly Report. A dozen (12) rebounds and three steals versus the Profs earned senior forward Cayla Sharkey (Lansdale, Pa.) her second Defensive Player of the Week award of the season. Meanwhile, 21 points, five rebounds, an assist, and a block garnered junior guard Lynzie Eggers (Turnersville, N.J.) a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.

Gwynedd Mercy University (7-3) welcomed Rowan University (7-4) to the Griffin Complex on Saturday, December 17, for their final home game of 2022. The Griffins held a comfortable advantage for most for the first half, leading the Profs by as many as eight points, 18-10 (3:30), in the opening quarter and separating from a 27-27 (4:18) stalemate to own a 35-31 (0:18) halftime lead. The tone changed in the third quarter, where a 10-0 start pushed the momentum in Rowan University’s favor, 41-35 (7:37), before a Griffin rally left the home side up four points headed to the final frame; 57-53 (0:00). Unfortunately, a 26-15 fourth quarter allowed the Profs to walk away with a 79-72 victory.

Sharkey was 2-of-5 (.400) from the field, hitting a pair of three-point baskets (2-of-4, .500) to pair six points with her 12 rebounds and three steals. She also recorded a pair of assists. Sharkey earned her first AEC Defensive Player of the Week honor on November 21 after  totaling 10 points, 15 rebounds, an assist, seven blocks, and four steals in wins over Arcadia University (W, 76-47 on Nov. 15) and Wilks University (W, 71-53 on Nov. 17). She was named to the AEC Weekly Honor Roll last week (Dec. 12) and currently ranks second in the conference for blocks (22).

Eggers was the Griffins’ leading scorer in the loss with 21 points. She was 7-of-19 (.368) from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 (1.000) at the free throw line while grabbing five rebounds, handing out an assist, and blocking a shot. This was her first AEC Weekly Report appearance of the season.

Gwynedd Mercy University will be back in action Monday, December 19, when they travel to Catholic University for the Catholic University Tournament for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
