Griffins Score Early and Late, Knock Around Patriots in 19-Run Production

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/20/2026) - Gwynedd Mercy University (17-15) punished the University of Valley Forge (12-22) with seven runs in the first inning and 12 more in the sixth to end today's contest with the Patriots early; 19-4. Down, 3-0 before their first at-bat, the Griffins evened the score with a bases-loaded double from junior left fielder Karl Wissmann (Cinnaminson, N.J.) (3-2) and a single to right field from sophomore second baseman Deven Ross (Lansdale, Pa.) (3-3). Sophomore catcher Peter Burnley (Sicklerville, N.J.) and junior center fielder Noah Waldron (Collingswood, N.J.) knocked in two runs apiece as the Griffins eventually batted around in a seven-run response; 7-3. A bullpen dual went the Red and Gold's way in the sixth, where they scored a dozen (12) by working their way through the line-up twice with eight hits, five walks, and a pair of Patriot errors; 19-4. Freshman pitcher Tristan Perry (Cherry Hill, N.J.) ended it in the top of the seventh by recording the final three outs after a pair of singles; fielder's choice, runner's interference, ground-out to second.

Griffin Highlights
  • Waldron and senior designated hitter Jimmy DeCarlo (Ridley Park, Pa.) singled to the left side of the University of Valley Forge infield to lead-off the Gwynedd Mercy University half of the first inning. The Griffins recovered from the Patriots 3-0 head start when Wissman plated the first two runs of a seven-run at-bat with his double to centerfield; 3-2. Ross followed with his single to right to even the score before Burnley and Waldron weighed in; 7-3.
  • In the sixth, the Red and Gold kept the line moving. Sophomore first baseman Brady Belfus (Deptford, N.J.) led off the at-bat with a single to right field. He moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a single through the left side from junior third baseman Drew Haines (Hammonton, N.J.) before scoring on a botched play by the Patriot pitcher; 8-4. Later in that at-bat, DeCarlo (10-4), Belfus (13-4), Haines (16-4), and DeCarlo contributed again (18-4) before junior pinch hitter Pete Hoffman (Levittown, Pa.) walked with the bases loaded to score the final Griffin run; 19-4.
  • Waldron (2-for-4), DeCarlo (3-for-5), sophomore shortstop Jake Vitale (Laurel Springs, N.J.) (2-for-4), Belfus (3-for-3), and Haines (2-for-3) all recorded multiple hits for the Griffins.
  • Senior Zachary Freas (Mickleton, N.J.) earned the win (1-0) with two innings of scoreless relief. He beamed one batter and allowed one hit.
