Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (3/31/2026) - In the eighth inning, junior first baseman
Karl Wissmann (Cinnaminson, N.J.) evened a crazy contest with Cairn University (1-19) at 8-8 when his single through the box scored sophomore second baseman
Deven Ross (Lansdale, Pa.). In the ninth inning, freshman third baseman
Felix Melendez (Philadelphia, Pa.) tripled to the right-center gap with one out to set the table for junior shortstop
Jake Vitale (Laurel Springs, N.J.); his successful sacrifice fly plated the the former for a 9-8 Gwynedd Mercy University (11-10) walk-off victory. The Griffins overcame six errors in the win thanks to a seven-run third inning and the late-inning heroics. Wissman was 3-for-5 with a run and a run-batted-in (RBI), and senior designated hitter
Jimmy DeCarlo (Ridley Park, Pa.) knocked in a pair of runs to get the Red and Gold rolling in the third inning with his bases-loaded single through the right side (4-2).
Griffin Highlights
- Gwynedd Mercy University came to the plate in the bottom of the third inning facing a 4-0 deficit. A lead-off walk to Vitale, a walk to junior center fielder Noah Waldron (Collingswood, N.J.), a botched fielder's choice, and DeCarlo's followed. After, a series of singles, a hit batsman, and a bases-loaded walk made the score 6-4 Griffins before Vitale's second at-bat safety-squeeze pushed the Red and Gold ahead 7-4.
- The Gwynedd Mercy University defense had its issues in the middle innings, forcing the Griffins to look for a tying tally in the eighth. There, Ross walked, moved to second on a DeCarlo sacrifice, and then scored on Wissman's two-out single; 8-8.
- Melendez took a 3-1 pitch to right center, it tipped off the fielder's outstretched glove and rolled beyond as he hustled to third base. Vitale did the job and took a 1-1 pitch to center field for the walk-off win; 9-8.
- In addition to Wissman, sophomore catcher Peter Burnley (Sicklerville, N.J.) (2-for-5) and sophomore right fielder Tyler Johnston (Haddon Township, N.J.) (2-for-3) also recorded multiple hits in the contest.
- The Griffins drew six walks, half came in the third inning, and freshman left fielder Charile Neal (Mickleton, N.J.) drew one in the fourth and sixth innings, but did not score in either situation.
- Senior Ryan Kasper (Levittown, Pa) earned the win (2-2) with a clean top of the ninth.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to Frank O. Genuardi Legends Baseball Field on Thursday, April 2, when they host Atlantic East Conference (AEC) rival Centenary University (N.J.) for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
