Seventh-Inning Rallies Split Senior Day Doubleheader with AEC Foe, Neumann University

4/27/2025 - (4/27/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (12-23, 5-5) tasted both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat in today's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) doubleheader finale versus Neumann University (10-30, 5-5) as both contests reversed fortunes in the seventh innings; the Griffins won the first game 3-2 with a three-run walk-off double from sophomore second baseman Avery Schwartz (Collegeville, Pa.);  but lost the second 9-5, when the Knights plated seven runs in their final at-bat of the afternoon. Prior to the start of the league twin bill, the Red and Gold honored the collegiate career of the Class of 2025; middle infielder/outfielder Carly Maw (Bensalem, Pa.), outfielder Ally McDaid (Maple Glen, Pa.), catcher/first baseman Shannon McLaughlin (Haddon Heights, N.J.), and pitcher/first baseman Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, Pa.). Junior shortstop Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.) knocked in three runs in game two with a first-inning single (1-0) and a two-run triple in the fifth (5-2), while Murphy (6.0 IP, 1K) took no decision despite holding the Knights to one earned run on hits and two walks.

Griffin Highlights - Game One
  • In the Gwynedd Mercy University seventh, Murphy and fifth-year catcher Kaylee Colantano (Clinton, N.J.) drew back-to-back walks before a fielder's choice and a McDaid single to short set the table for Schwartz's walk-off triple; 3-2.
  • The opener was scoreless through four innings as fifth-year Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) commanded the circle. She gave up two in the fifth - both unearned - while allowing only two hits and two walk in a two-strikeout win (9-6).
  • Schwartz (2-for-3) and McDaid (2-for-3) were the only Griffins to record multiple hits in the contest. Fifth-year utility Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) recorded the other hit (1-for-3) with her infield single in the first inning.
Griffin Highlights - Game Two
  • High off their game-one win, the Red and Gold scored three runs in their first at-bat of game two; a lead-off walk to Cordero was followed by a sacrifice, a single from Smith, and a three-run home run from sophomore third baseman Hannah Cohen (North Wales, Pa.); 3-0.
  • The Knights close the gap to a single run with a run in the third (3-1) and fifth innings; 3-2. But, Gwynedd Mercy University answered back as singles from McDaid and McLaughlin put runners aboard for Smith's triple down the right field line; 5-2.
As a result of today's AEC doubleheader, Gwynedd Mercy University awaits the conference office's tiebreaker announcement to learn their fate for the 2025 AEC Softball Championship Tournament.
