Saints Sweep Griffins in AEC Softball Twin Bill

Washington, DC - (4/14/2025) - Washed off this weekend's originally scheduled dates, today's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) doubleheader against Marymount University (12-20, 4-2) went in the Saints' favor as the home team took the opener 8-2 and the nightcap 17-3 in five innings. Senior first baseman Shannon McLaughlin (Haddon Heights, N.J.) grounded out to second to score sophomore designated player Maya Hellyer (Quakertown, Pa.) in the fourth inning (7-1) and junior shortstop Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.) hit a solo shot in the fifth to account for the Red and Gold runs in game one, while Gwynedd Mercy University (7-18, 3-3) scored game-two tallies with a second-inning sacrifice fly from freshman outfielder Chole Heckman (Bethel, Pa.) (4-1), a Saint error on a grounder from freshman catcher Makayla Mihelcic (Souderton, Pa.) in the fourth inning (11-2), and a Hellyer ground out to third base in the fifth (17-3). Sophomore Grace Carney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) started both games for the Griffins.

Game 1 vs. Marymount University
  • Gwynedd Mercy University had runners in scoring position in their first two at-bats, but they did not score a run until the fourth inning. There, Hellyer led off with a single and fifth-year catcher Kaylee Colantano (Clinton, N.J.) walked before a wild pitch and McLaughlin's grounder to second brought her back home; 7-1.
  • Smith's first homer of the season led off the fifth inning.
Game 2 vs. Marymount University
  • Sophomore left fielder Kassidy Kehoe (Lansdale, Pa.) led off the second inning with a ball back through the box. She moved to second when Hellyer got beamed and third when Mihelcic walked. Heckman scored her with a fly to right; 4-1.
  • In the fourth inning, Hellyer singled with one out and scored soon after as the Saints' first baseman had trouble with a ground ball off of Mihelcic's bat; 11-2.
  • Smith singled with one out in the fifth. She moved to second base on another Marymount University error and eventually scored after a single from Kehoe and a Hellyer grounder to third; 17-3.
Gwynedd Mercy University briefly breaks from their AEC schedule tomorrow, Tuesday, April 15, to host Eastern University for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader. As part of Student Engagement's GMercyU After Dark event series, the twin bill will also serve as a Softball Social offering burgers, snacks, giveaways…and trolley service from ResHall and UHall to Genuardi Legends Softball Field.
