Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (3/29/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (5-16, 1-1 AEC) opened conference play by welcoming Atlantic East Conference (AEC) runner up from 2024 Marywood University (8-12, 1-1 AEC) to Frank O. Genuardi Legends Field. After coming up just short in game one with a 6-3 defeat, game two was filled with a thrilling four run seventh inning for the Red and Gold as the team walked off with an 8-7 victory. Senior pitcher Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, Pa.) started in the circle for the Griffins in game one pitching four innings allowing nine hits, six earned runs, and walking four in the loss (0-8). 5th year pitcher Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) got the nod in game two and pitched a complete game (seven innings) allowing seven hits, four earned runs, four walks, and six strikeouts in the victory (5-5).
Griffin Highlights:
Game One:
- After allowing two runs in the first inning, sophomore utility player Hannah Cohen (North Whales, Pa.) answered back with a run-batted-in (RBI) double to right field scoring junior shortstop Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.) and cutting the Pacers lead in half (2-1).
- Down 6-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Red and Gold looked to answer the call with a two-run sixth inning. An RBI sacrifice fly from senior outfielder Ally McDaid (Maple Glen, Pa.) and an error from Marywood cut the lead down to 6-3 but it would be the final runs the Griffins scored in game one.
Game Two:
- In the first inning a surprise bunt for a hit from 5th year outfielder Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) put her second all-time in career hits with a 157 total hits. Cordero would come around and score on a wild pitch bringing the score 2-1 in favor of the Pacers after one inning.
- Another wild pitch from Marywood scored Baumeister in the second bringing Gwynedd Mercy within one (3-2).
- In the third inning, Baumeister tripled to right center scoring both Cohen and Smith and giving the Griffins their first lead on the day (4-3).
- Down 7-4 going into the bottom of the seventh, Gwynedd Mercy scored four runs thanks to an RBI single from Smith and two errors from Marywood to allow the Griffins to enjoy an 8-4 walk off win.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to AEC play on Saturday, April 5, when the team welcomes 2024 AEC champions Centenary University (N.J.) for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader showdown.
