Abington, Pa. - (3/26/2025) - With Gwynedd Mercy University (3-14) riding a disappointing eight-game losing streak, the Griffins looked to put an end to the tough stretch as the team traveled to Penn State Abington (5-11) for a doubleheader affair. Seven innings were not enough in game one as the score was tied 4-4 heading into extras, but sophomore catcher Maya Hellyer (Quakertown, Pa.) came up with the clutch run-batted-in (RBI) hit in the top of the eighth to give the Red and Gold a 5-4 victory in game one. Game two, unfortunately, would not allow Gwynedd Mercy all 21 outs to decide the outcome as the contest was called to a stop due to darkness and fell 6-4 in six innings. 5th year pitcher Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) was phenomenal in game one, pitching all eight innings, allowing one earned run on five walks and seven strikeouts in the win (3-5).
Griffin Highlights:
Game One:
- In the first inning, Gwynedd Mercy came out of the gate full steam ahead as junior shortstop Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.) hit a rocket down the left field line, scoring 5th year outfielder Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) and giving the Griffins a 1-0 early lead. A batter later, sophomore utility player Hannah Cohen (North Wales, Pa.) hit home Smith with a single to put the Red and Gold up 2-0.
- Baumeister had a productive out in the third inning with an RBI groundout to third base, allowing Cohen to cross the dish (3-0).
- With the game tied going into the final inning (7), sophomore infielder Avery Schwartz (Collegeville, Pa.) brought home the go-ahead run, giving the team a 4-3 lead.
Game Two:
- Down 2-0 in the early frame of game two, Gwynedd Mercy got on the board in the third inning with a Cohen RBI single and a Baumeister RBI sacrifice fly to even the score at two apiece.
- Cordero continued to stay hot in the doubleheader as she drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth with a single to third base, scoring senior pitcher Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, Pa.) (3-2).
- Gwynedd Mercy extended their lead in the fifth inning when freshman catcher Makayla Mihelcic (Souderton, Pa.) recorded her second career RBI, reaching on a fielder's choice and allowing Schwartz to cross home plate (4-2).
Gwynedd Mercy University is back in action tomorrow, Thursday, March 27, when the team travels to Rutgers-Camden for a doubleheader contest. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
