Cold, Hot, Up, and Down; Griffins Give to Golden Wolves in Overtime

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (12/3/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (5-2) could not find a basket off the opening tip, but worked Alvernia University (4-3) down to a 31-22 (0:32) halftime deficit. It was junior guard Mazen Sayed (Chichester, Pa.) who sparked the Red and Gold and he continued to lead them through a second half that saw the Griffins tie the game on a jumper by sophomore guard Bruce Smith (Philadelphia, Pa.) just past the seven-minute mark, 57-57 (6:50), and grab a three-point lead on a much-needed three-point basket from graduate guard Dylan Harris (Bloomsburg, Pa.); 69-66 (3:33). Unfortunately, the Golden Wolves forced an overtime frame where an 81-76 (2:38) Griffin perch was not enough as the visitors used a couple clutch three-point baskets (1:54, 0:38) to slingshot for an eventual 88-84 (0:06) win.

Griffin Highlights
  • Sayed was the spark off the Gwynedd Mercy University bench, keeping the Griffins in the contest with six points and a pair of first-half rebounds, before finishing the contest with career-high 27 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. He was efficient too; hitting 9-of-10 (.900) from the floor and 7-of-8 (.875) from the free throw line.
  • Smith was an effective second-half weapon for the Red and Gold; he finished with 15 points, two rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
  • Senior guard D.J. Johnson (Norristown, Pa.) made several clutch baskets and was the third Griffin in double figures with 13 points. He also recorded two rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
  • Senior guard Jalen Snead (Philadelphia, Pa.) found a way to contribute with a free throw (1-of-4, .250), six rebounds, seven assists, and a steal.
  • Harris finished with nine points, a rebound, and three steals.
Gwynedd Mercy University plays their last home game of 2025 on Monday, December 8, when they host Penn State Abington for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
