Griffins Leave Pacers Behind in AEC Bout

Scranton, Pa. - (4/17/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (6-7, 3-1) scored the first three goals of the affair and left Marywood University (3-10, 1-3) behind in an eventual 11-5 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) final. After holding a 3-1 edge at the first-quarter break, the Griffins used a 3-0 second quarter spread to lead 6-1 at intermission. The second half was more competitive with Pacers halving the Red and Gold goals in the third quarter (4-2) and doubling them in the final frame (1-2). But, it was not enough to catch the Griffins as sophomore attack Josh Devine (Pottstown, Pa.) starred with a season-high seven goals, grabbed two ground balls, and caused a turnover. His older brother Jared Devine (Pottstown, Pa.) earned the win (6-7) with 16 saves, a ground ball, and a caused turnover.

Griffin Highlights
  • Senior attack Jack Freeland (Riverton, N.J.) found sophomore attack Gunnar Seaman (Worcester, Pa.) for the game's first goal; 1-0 (9:19). Devine netted the first of his seven just three minutes later, 2-0 (6:30), and a slick shot from sophomore attack Nick Citrigno (Southampton, Pa.) made it 3-0 Gwynedd Mercy University with 4:27 left to play in the first quarter.
  • Devine scored twice (13:28, 1:54) in the second quarter and Seaman once (6-1, 0:50).
  • In the second half, Devine dominated. He scored the first three goals of the third quarter (13:19, 12:26, 9:26) and the only Griffin goal of the fourth quarter (11-5, 3:00) to ensure a Red and Gold victory.
  • In addition to Devine, Seaman and senior attack Nick Flamma (Sewell, N.J.) recorded multiple points in the contest. The former paired his two goals with a ground ball, while the latter also provided an assist and a ground ball.
  • The Griffin defense was outstanding. Junior Ryan Wilkins (Galloway, N.J.) finished with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Pat O'Neill (Pennsuaken, N.J.) offered three ground balls and three caused turnovers. And sophomore Dylan Gazda (Pottstown, Pa.) chipped in two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Gwynedd Mercy University was 22-for-28 (.750) on their clear attempts, they won five face-offs (5-of-19, .263), scored two man-up goals (2-for-5, .400), and recovered 30 ground balls.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Athletic Complex on Saturday, April 20, when they host AEC rival Neumann University for a 4:00 p.m. Senior Day contest.
