Gwynedd Valley, Pa. (3/11/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (0-5) looked to get their first win of the season as they welcomed Eastern University (1-3) to the Athletic Complex. The Griffins and Eagles had an offensive explosion as the teams combined for 30 goals in the contest, however, it was Eastern University who would come away on top 16-14. Both senior attackers
Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.) and
Caroline Cleary (Chalfont, Pa.) finished with a game-high five points. The former tallied three goals, two assists, two groundballs, and five draw controls, while the latter finished with two goals, three assists, two groundballs, one caused turnover, and one draw control.
Griffin Highlights:
- Four Griffins scored a hat trick (3 goals) in the contest including Varilla, junior attack Hailey Bloom (Margate City, N.J.), junior midfielder Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.), and junior midfielder Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.). The four combined for 24 shots out of the team's 28.
- Freshman goalkeeper Victoria Sloan (Philadelphia, Pa.) still searches for her first collegiate career win in between the pipes. Sloan finished with six saves on 20 shots in the loss (0-5).
- The Eagles were awarded with six free-position shots and capitalizing on four of them, while the red and gold, only took two free-position shots and only found the back of the net on one of them.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Thursday, March 14, when the Griffins travel down 309 to take on rival Arcadia University for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
