Davenport, Fl. (3/10/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (4-3) started their week-long spring road trip down in Florida to participate in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Gwynedd Mercy's first opponent was the University of Minnesota Morris (2-3). After an offensive outburst in the sixth and eighth inning, the Griffins defeated the Cougars 11-1 in eighth innings. Senior pitcher
Frank Ebling (Cherry Hill, N.J.) went six and a third of an inning giving up one earned run and three hits, while striking out eight in the win (3-0).
Griffin Highlights:
- In the second inning, junior infielder Ricky Templeton (West Deptford, N.J.) hit his first career home run as a Griffin and is the first player to hit a home run (1-1) for the Griffins in the 2024 season.
- In the third, senior infielder Nick Price (Levittown, Pa.) put the bat to the ball and reached first safely due to an error from the second baseman. This allowed junior pitcher Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) and sophomore outfielder Chris Nodeland (Hamilton, N.J.) to score and give the Griffins a 3-1 lead.
- In the next inning, comparable results from the previous inning allowed freshman infielder Ryan Horner (Cinnaminson, N.J.) to score thanks to freshman infielder Daulton McDonald (Cinnaminson, N.J.) making good contact at the dish (4-1).
- In the sixth inning Gwynedd Mercy's offensive came alive. A sacrifice bunt from Nodeland allowed freshman infielder Drew Haines (Hammonton, N.J.) to score (5-1). The next batter Root hit an RBI single through the right side (6-1). Nodeland would score on a passed ball (7-1), and sophomore outfielder Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) grounded out to third, bringing McDonald home.
- With the bases loaded in the eighth, Junker worked a good at-bat and walked bringing home McDonald. Just two batters later pitch hitter Dom Gerasimowicz (Pottstown, Pa.) doubled to left field bringing home the Griffins final two runs (11-1).
Gwynedd Mercy University continues its spring road trip down in Florida when they take on Muhlenberg College on Sunday, March 10, for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
