Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (2/28/2024) - During a late afternoon deluge, Gwynedd Mercy University (0-3) battled Wilkes University (1-2) to a 15-12 loss. The Griffins paced the Colonels through the first quarter with extra-player goals from junior midfielder Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.) (3-0, 9:45) and senior attack Caroline Cleary (Chalfont, Pa.) (5-3, 2:05) giving the Red and Gold respective leads of 3-0 and 5-3 before junior attack Hailey Bloom (Margate City, N.J.) scored a late tally to keep them ahead; 6-5 (0:25). Each side scored three goals in the second quarter, leaving Gwynedd Mercy University up 9-8 (3:04) at halftime. Unfortunately, the Colonels scored the only two goals of the third quarter (9:11, 6:57) and outscored the Griffins 5-3 in the final frame.

Griffins Highlights

• Gwynedd Mercy University out shot Wilkes University by a 33-26 margin, including a 20-13 advantage in the first two frames.
• The Griffins were 4-of-9 (.444) on their free position shots.
• The Red and Gold also held a 26-19 edge in ground balls, turned the ball over less (20-28), and cleared the ball at a rate of 81.8% (18-of-22).
• Bloom led three Griffins with multiple points with four goals. She also recorded four ground balls and a caused turnover.
• Collins and senior attack Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.) scored two goals apiece; the former added four ground balls and five draw controls to her tallies, while the latter additionally recorded two ground balls.
• Cleary recorded a draw control and caused a turnover in excess of her goal.
• Junior midfielder Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) provided an assist, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers.
