Hughes Overtimes Tally Preserves AEC Win over Saints

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/5/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (4-7, 2-0) led Marymount University (4-8, 1-1) by a 9-5 measure at halftime of this afternoon's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) contest. But the Griffins' 5-1 second quarter was equaled by slight Saint advantages in the third (5-3) and fourth (6-4) as the affair went to overtime on a 16-16 stalemate. There, a late opportunity for sophomore attack Richie Hughes (Turnersville, N.J.) was converted to demand victorious cheers from the Gwynedd Mercy faithful; 17-16 (1:13).

Griffin Highlights
  • Each side scored four goals in the first quarter and most came unassisted. Gwynedd Mercy University's first two came from Hughes (13:59, 8:48) with succeeding scores following from sophomore midfielder Ian Kish (Easton, Pa.) (3-2, 7:10) and sophomore attack Dominic Romania (Phoenixville, Pa.) (4-2, 5:40).
  • The Griffins separated with an impressive second quarter; five consecutive scores gave the Griffins a 9-5 edge with 1:23 remaining.
  • Gwynedd Mercy University was more efficient than Marymount University (16-of-51, .314) as they scored on 17-of-39 (.436) shots.
  • The Griffins were 22-of-31 (.710) on the clear and 12-of-33 (.364) on the face-off. They recovered 25 ground balls and caused seven of the Saints' 19 turnovers.
  • Freshman attack Gunnar Seaman (Worcester, Pa.) led the Griffins with his second straight six-goal performance. He also recorded an assist, a ground ball, and two caused turnovers.
  • Hughes finished with six points (5 goals, assist) and a ground ball.
  • Multiple point performances were also provided by junior attack Jason Eide (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) (2 goals, 3 assists) and sophomore midfielder Ian Kish (Easton, Pa.) (3 goals).
  • Freshman defenseman Dylan Gazda (Pottstown, Pa.) headlined the Gwynedd Mercy University defensive effort with a ground ball and three caused turnovers.
  • In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Jared Devine (Pottstown, Pa.) earned the win (2-2) with a pair of clutch saves in the final 9:47 of the affair. Senior goalkeeper Chase McFeeley (Mullica Hill, N.J.) (53:00) made 14 saves and recovered four ground balls.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Tuesday, April 12, when they visit Marywood University for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
