Women's Volleyball Celebrates Senior Class Before Three-Set Loss to Golden Wolves

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (11/3/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (10-14) welcomed Alvernia University (13-9) to the Griffin Complex for the final regular season home match of the year and honored a senior class including middle hitter Ashley Brown (Lansdale, Pa.), outside hitter Bria Purnell (Reading, Pa.), and outside hitter/right side Julia Rabe (Virginia Beach, Va.) prior to opening serve. The Golden Wolves grew a 20-9 lead in the first set, but needed to fend off the Griffins in a 25-20 conclusion. The second set Gwynedd Mercy University took a 6-2 lead before Alvernia University responded with a 15-6 run that inspired their eventual 25-23 win. In the end, it was a 25-16 third-set final that earned the Golden Wolves the victory; 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-16).

Griffin Highlights
  • Gwynedd Mercy University executed their offense at its highest efficiency in the first set with a .297 (14K-3E-37TA) hitting percentage. The Griffins eventually finished the match with a .117 (29K-18E-94TA) success rate.
  • Brown put in the hard work to score a team-high 11.5 points in the match. She scored nine kills on a .368 (9K-2E-19TA) hitting percentage, made a pair of solo blocks, and assisted on another.
  • Sophomore setter Ayanna Gaston (Middletown, Del.) complimented 24 assists with two kills, three aces, and three block assists.
  • Sophomore libero Charlotte Pugh (Philadelphia, Pa.) captained the Red and Gold defense with a team-high 14 digs. She also provided a kill, two assists, and a pair of aces.
Gwynedd Mercy University will complete their regular season schedule tomorrow, Saturday, November 4, at the Ursinus College Tri-Match with competition against King's College (PA) (2:00 p.m.) and the hosting Golden Bears (4:00 p.m.).
