Langhorne, Pa. - (9/6/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University looked to rally from a 2-0 deficit with a definitive 25-11 win in the third set of this evening's match at Cairn University. Unfortunately, the Highlanders rebounded from the defeat with a 25-13 fourth-frame win that precipitated the eventual 3-1 (25-13, 25-13, 11-25, 25-13) conclusion. Junior middle hitter Ashley Brown (Lansdale, Pa.) led the Griffins with 10.5 points on nine kills, a solo block, and a block assist.

After dropping the first sets - 25-13 and 25-15 - Gwynedd Mercy University (1-3) made their stand in the third set. There, a pair of aces from freshman setter Ayanna Gaston (Middletown, Del.) and a .292 (10K-3E-24TA) team hitting percentage earned the Griffins an 8-0 head start that they sustained until an impressive 25-11 end. Regrettably, Cairn University (3-0) made up for their third-set demise with a 25-13 win in the fourth set.

Gaston added seven kills, 11 assists, and nine digs to her aces. Junior outside hitter Bria Purnell (Reading, Pa.) also helped score as she totaled eight kills and a block assist in excess of her nine digs. Senior libero Ashley Morris (Quakertown, Pa.) captained the Gwynedd Mercy University's defensive efforts with 18 digs. She additional provided a pair of assists.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Griffin Complex on Thursday, September 8, when they host Cedar Crest College in a 7:00 p.m. match.
