Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (9/8/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University trailed Cedar Crest College most of the way in the third set of this evening's match. But, it closed on the serve of freshman setter Ayanna Gaston (Middletown, Del.) as the Griffins scored the last five points of the frame with a pair of Falcon errors, two kills from junior middle hitter Ashley Brown (Lansdale, Pa.), and a finishing ace; 25-22. The win spurred Gwynedd Mercy University for a walkaway 25-15 win in the fourth set of a 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-22, 25-15) final. Brown totaled 13 kills, but junior outside hitter Bria Purnell (Reading, Pa.) was the star of the victory with 20.5 points as she matched her career-high with 19 kills, scored an ace, and assisted on a block.

Gwynedd Mercy University (2-3) took the opening set from Cedar Crest College (0-1) by a 25-21 measure, but the match was tied after the second set as the Falcons responded with a 25-18 win; 1-1. Cedar Crest College looked to take control of the match in the pivotal third set, but fortune was not in their favor as a determined Griffin effort permitted Gaston to dictate the deciding points. With momentum in hand, Gwynedd Mercy University closed the affair with a 25-15 exclamation point.

Purnell added five digs to her impressive point total. Brown complimented her kills with an assist and two digs. Gaston totaled 31 assists, seven aces, and eight digs. Senior libero Ashley Morris (Quakertown, Pa.) captained the Griffins' defensive efforts with 18 digs. She also recorded two assists and an ace.

Gwynedd Mercy University continues their schedule on Tuesday, September 13, when they visit Penn State Berks for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
