Owls Escape Griffins in Four-Set Finish

Bryn Mawr, Pa. – (9/21-2022) – Gwynedd Mercy University battled back and forth with Bryn Mawr College, but came up short in a four-set finish; 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 14-25, 26-24). The Griffins hit a match-high .240 (8K-2E-25TA) in an impressive 25-14 third-set victory. Junior outside hitter Bria Purnell (Reading, Pa.) led Gwynedd Mercy University with 17 points (16 kills, 2 block assists).
 
Bryn Mawr College (5-4) clawed their way to a 25-22 win in the opening set. The same scenario occurred in the second set as Gwynedd Mercy University (3-7) was up late, 21-19, before ultimately succumbing to six unanswered Owl points; 25-21. Junior outside hitter Julianne Dove (Pottstown, Pa.) served for multiple aces to get the Griffins out a strong start in the third set, 10-2. Purnell ensured they would win it – 25-14 – with six kills on an efficient .333 (6K-2E-12TA) hitting percentage. Gwynedd Mercy University attempted to force a fifth set, but allowed Bryn Mawr College to recover from a 15-7 fourth-set deficit with a 19-9 rally that precipitated a dramatic 26-24 Owl win.
 
Purnell totaled her 17 points with 16 kills and a pair of block assists. She also recorded five digs. Junior middle hitter Ashley Brown (Lansdale, Pa.) finished the game with 11.5 points (10 kills, 1 block assist), two assists, and four digs. Freshman setter Ayanna Gaston (Middletown, Del.) was a major contributor as well with 30 assists and a team-high six aces. She additionally recorded a kill, four blocks (1 solo, 3 assisted), and nine digs. Senior libero Ashely Morris (Quakertown, Pa.) and sophomore middle blocker Lexi Lane (Frederick, Colo.) captained the Gwynedd Mercy University defense; the former recorded an ace in addition to her 24 digs, while the latter scored five blocks (1 solo, 4 assisted).
 
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their schedule on Friday, September 23, when they visit Moravian University for a 7:00 pm match.
