Griffins Lockdown Saints, Lockhart Shines In AEC Finale

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/27/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University (4-11, 2-4) ended their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) and regular seasons on a high note with a thrilling 12-7 victory over Marymount University (8-8, 4-2). The Griffins set the tone early, separating for a 3-1 first-quarter edge with unassisted scores from sophomore attack Jason Eide (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) (2-1, 9:16) and sophomore GianLuca Lockhart (Turnersville, N.J.) (3-1, 1:04). Gwynedd Mercy University doubled-down in the second quarter, scoring twice for each of the Saints' first two goals, 7-3 (5:13), and matching them goal-for-goal to an 8-4 halftime spread. Lockhart headlined the Griffins' statement second quarter with goals at 6:08, 5:13, and 0:26. He scored his fifth goal to put Gwynedd Mercy University up 9-5 with 4:19 remaining in the third quarter and from there late-period goals from sophomore midfielder Nick Flamma (Sewell, N.J.) (10-5, 1:28) and Eide (11-5, 1:20) put the Griffins ahead 11-5 heading to the final frame. The Saints did outscore Gwynedd Mercy University in the fourth quarter, but the 2-1 margin was not enough to deny the Griffins' triumph.

Lockhart took a team-high 16 shots to score his career-high five goals. He also recorded four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Flamma and senior attack Cameron Ostroff (Wilmington, Del.) scored twice apiece and both recovered a ground ball. Sophomore midfielder Tyler Long (Downingtown, Pa.) was the fourth Griffin with multiple points as he assisted on both Flamma's (1-0, 14:09 1QTR) and Ostroff's (4-2, 10:51 2QTR) first scores. Gwynedd Mercy University's defensive efforts were highlighted by the efforts of senior defenseman Brendan Donovan (Fort Bragg, N.C.), freshman midfielder Michael Knapp (Harleysville, Pa.), and senior goalkeeper Aubron Swartley (Mechanicsburg, Pa.). Donovan recorded a ground ball and two caused turnovers, Knapp complimented his assist with two ground balls and a caused turnover, and Swartley (4-10) accompanied his dozen (12) saves with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Gwynedd Mercy University finishes the 2022 regular season with a 4-11 overall record and a 2-4 AEC standing. They await seeding in the upcoming AEC Championship Tournament which opens with quarterfinal play on Saturday, April 30.
